Here's Why Gen Z's Vote Matters

With over 20 million people from this generation eligible to vote, Gen Z has an unprecedented influence on this year's election

As many have realized so far, Gen Z, composed of those born between 1990 and 2010, is the generation of change. Gen Z is always at the forefront of all social change and has proved time and time again that they are a force to be reckoned with. Because the United States is a global power with far-reaching influence, all eyes are on this year’s American presidential election.

As mentioned before, Gen Zers are currently spearheading social movements such as the fight to combat climate-change and social inequalities. However, you may still be thinking, “Why do they need to be involved  in the presidential election of 2020?” , but Gen Z has an unprecedented influence on the outcome of this election. Gen Z composes 22% of America’s population and, according to the Pew Research Center, 20 million people from this generation will be eligible to vote in this year’s election.

The young people of today are the leaders of tomorrow. In order for this to happen, it is necessary that they participate in this election since their representatives should fight to create this promising tomorrow.

It is also important to highlight that Gen Z is known for creating inclusive spaces for all voices to be heard, and they need to decide which candidate will reflect upon that. In other words, they need to elect someone that will help them in the journey of creating new opportunities for everyone in society. Therefore, they try hard to educate themselves about important topics and find a way to contribute to that.

Last but not least, it is crucial to consider that Gen Z is the most diverse generation. To illustrate, according to the Pew Research Center, in the United States, 48% of this generation are people of color, evidence of widespread diversity; this is also why their worries may differ  from the concerns of  previous generations. Their wish to elect someone that will guarantee a good life regardless of who they are.

As you can see, it is extremely important that Gen Z participate in the American election of 2020 for diverse reasons. First of all, they need to assist in the creation of a better tomorrow for them and the next generations. Second of all, they are always fighting in order to create a better society for everyone and fight for respect for all cultures. Finally, this generation is also known for its diversity, and that is exactly what they need to reflect in the 2020 election.

However, if you are part of Gen Z and are not able to vote in this election, you do not need to worry; there are many ways that you can help in this election, such as educating yourself and others about the candidates, sharing information on social media, signing up to be an election judge, and most of all, convincing your family and friends who are of age to vote!
